Reduce toxins that enter and accumulate in your body. Throughout the year, we accumulate preservatives, pesticides, stimulants and heavy metals through food, water and the air we breathe. Also, our body produces toxins and waste products as a natural result of the process of digestion and respiration. The result of a build-up of toxins can leave us tired, grumpy and suffering from poor digestion. This in time leads to disease.
Yoga has many approaches to detoxing. One of the most powerful being the shatkarmas of hatha yoga:
- Neti (nasal irrigation)
- Kunjal (stomach wash)
- Laghoo and Shankhaprakshalana (partial intestinal wash)
- Poorna Shankhaprakshalana (full intestinal wash) held in the Paiania ashram only.
The above practices eliminate the build-up of toxins and lead to optimum health.
The effects of shatkarmas can be summed up in one word – purification. Without purification of the body one will not be ready for the higher practices of yoga. When the different systems of the body have been purified, the overall result is that energy flows through the body freely. One’s capacity to work, think, digest, taste, feel, experience, etc. increases and greater awareness develops.
