According to tantra, the body is a spiritual tool to realize one’s higher nature. This concept is not only limited to the physical body but encompasses the chakras contained in the body. The awakening of chakras induces an altered state of seeing the world in a different manner.
With the awakening of each chakra, the interactive consciousness and the passive consciousness also awaken. The interactive consciousness is used to relate and understand the external world, while the passive consciousness looks within as the observer of all experiences.
As the awakening of chakras takes place, the two forms of consciousness become one, giving rise to a new awareness. Working through the five koshas and the seven chakras, tantra can take one from the gross dimension to the transcendental dimension, and this process is part of tantric sadhana.

Tantra teaches the individual how to explore the body, how to use the faculties of the body, and how to realize the awakening of chakras and the shakti inherent in each chakra. The body is a temple to be utilized and not misused or abused. Smoking or overindulging in eating are common instances of misusing the body.
To follow the natural rhythms of life is the way to properly use the body. If the lifestyle becomes unnatural, the body is abused and misused. The body is therefore seen as the only temple where a connection can be made with the real Self. The human life form is the only form that has the inherent possibility to make this connection, thus tantra says this body is a special gift.
To use it properly, one must maintain discipline and restraint in life, and avoid things that will destroy the body, nature and personality. Purity of heart and mind are the requirements in order to advance in tantra.
Tantra recognizes the special character of this body as the temple of supreme consciousness, where one is able to realize the higher nature while living in the gross dimension.
Therefore, the advice from tantra is to cultivate respect and awareness for the body, for the self and for life itself.
