Samskara

Begin with thought ‘What is samskara?’.  The word samskara comes from the root samyak, which means harmony. Samskara is samyak akara, meaning harmonious form, shape, or personality. While the word samskriti, which is translated as culture, comes from samyak kriti, harmonious act, in other words, cultured act. When you say, “This person is cultured”, it means the behaviour or actions of that person are appropriate. So harmonious act is samskriti and harmonious form is samskara.

Walking the path inspired by guru

The discovery within oneself, of oneself, and the discovery of oneness is what you undertake in spiritual life. How it happens, when it happens, that only God knows. You do not know where the end is. You know that you have to walk the path, and in this discovery of oneness and in this discovery of oneself, one has to connect to an inspiration. That inspiration is the guru, the teacher. In that person you

Different paths for different types

Shukracharya and Brihaspati were gurus who catered to two kinds of people. Sri Swamiji said often that there have always been three kinds of people, right from the early beginnings to the present day. One group is called devata, which means the affluent people. The second group is called danava, the backward people, who don’t have resources, facilities or economic support, and are struggling to survive. The third group is that of manava, the middle

Guru – disciple relationship

If you want to discern your dharma, kartavya and sadhana with respect to the guru, you have to first identify the kind of relationship you wish to cultivate with the guru. You cannot be an aarta or artharthi and expect moksha. You cannot be a jignasu and mumukshu and expect artha. First decide, don’t be confused in your mind. You have to realize and understand what type of a person you are and what you

Raja yoga

Raja yoga is the yogic science of mind and mind management. You can attain excellent health by the path of hatha yoga, and you can balance the mind through the sadhana of raja yoga. It is not about closing the eyes and experiencing visions in meditation. Just as you empty your bowels each day for the physical health of the body, in raja yoga you also empty your mind of the debris that has accumulated

Our Hero

Who is a guru? Does anybody declare, ‘I am a guru’? If they do, it is their ego which is declaring it. There is no such thing as guru. There is only one thing – proper living. As disciples we try to live properly. That has to be the effort. As followers and aspirants, we have to try to live properly. That has to be the effort, with right understanding, with right awareness and with

New Year’s Resolution

Every year we make resolutions and after a few days they fizzle out and then we say, “Okay, I’ll wait for next year”. Like that, time passes very quickly and we change many calendars in our life. The sankalpa or resolution which we make during the New Year period generally reflects our state of mind, our aspirations and ambitions, and whatever reflects our aspirations and ambitions, drives, motivations and desires is bound to end at

The Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is a time to celebrate two things: one is the birth of Jesus and the other is the dawn of Christ consciousness. Jesus was a person and Christ consciousness was the spirit that descended. You are a person, you have a body, you are limited and restricted by the senses and the mind, but at the same time there is the life force, vitality and dynamism which physically or externally is recognized as spirit,

The power of hope

Once, there were four candles burning. After burning for some time, one candle went out. Before going out, it said, “My name is Love, and nobody knows me.” That is true; for everybody love is physical, carnal, sensual and sensorial. There is no understanding of pure love any more. So the candle burnt out. After some time, the second candle went out. As it was going out, it said, “My name is Compassion, but people

Living Yoga

If you want to live yoga, you have to sacrifice whatever is a barrier to spiritual life. If you want to live in a room that has been closed for years, you have to open the doors and windows, clean out all the grime and dust which has accumulated, light some incense and make it a pleasant room to live in. You have to allow the fresh air in. If you don’t like it then
