A Gurukul System of Education

Ιn an ashram the tradition of the gurukul, the teacher’s family, is where there is an environment and a lifestyle conducive to spiritual growth; where the vision and spirit of the masters of a tradition is kept alive. It is an environment which is spiritual and where the vision of the guru can unfold. Developing the whole personality Yoga in the gurukul system involves integration and development of the entire human personality, not only the

The Teachings of Krishna

Establishment of dharma The focus of Krishna’s life was the establishment of dharma. Dharma is identified as a purushartha. Dharma is not a belief, a concept or a religion; dharma is action, effort. This action and effort should lead one to experiencing the divine nature that is dormant in every being. Krishna wanted to establish this concept of dharma right from the time he became self-aware. In the festival of Ganga Dashahara, the women float

The Nine Forms of Bhakti 5

The ninth form of bhakti is atma nivedan – total surrender, total fusion, total merger. Atma means ‘self and nivedan means ‘to offer’. It happens when even the last vestige of individual identity is dissolved in cosmic awareness. It can occur physically too. As you go through the different processes of bhakti, it is not only the mind which evolves, but also the body. Each and every atom of the body becomes enlightened. The atoms

The Nine Forms of Bhakti 4

The seventh form of bhakti is seeing the spark of life and divinity in each and everyone. There should be no distinction between one person and another. There should be no concept of high and low, but there is identification. Just as I can identify with God there, I should be able to identify with God here, in you, in me, even in different forms of creation. There is a tradition in India that once

The Nine Forms of Bhakti 3

The fifth form of bhakti is incorporating the transcendental, humanitarian and unconditioned qualities into everyday life. The qualities which we express in our lives are conditioned qualities which have some restrictions and motivations in them. The word for quality is guna. The real language of living is expressing these qualities which are cosmic, divine and human, which are not conditioned, but which are free from every kind of mental or manifest impression. We talk of

The Nine Forms of Bhakti 2

The second form of bhakti is, in colloquial language, listening to lilas or stories of divine beings. If we think with our rational mind, then these lilas about enlightened beings can help inspire us to accept a different lifestyle, mentality, and mode of behaviour. However, it also has a psychological meaning. It is the nature of the mind to involve itself in constant gossip and criticism. The moment you stop your mind gossiping and criticising,

The Nine Forms of Bhakti 1

The Shakti aspect has two forms. The first is maya, which tends to take one away from one’s divine nature. Here we are not talking of God but of the essence of divinity. The other aspect is bhakti, which brings one closer to the essence of divinity. These are the two forces of the Almighty. Most of us in this earthly plane, in the manifest dimension, are caught up in our own head-trips, beliefs, ambitions

How can we become more devoted?

Devotion is an expression of qualities such as faith and belief coming together. Faith and belief are not abstract qualities but represent some basic realizations that you may have had about yourself and about God. We can say belief is personal reflection and faith is universal reflection. You have faith in God, something and somebody whom you have never seen and may not see in this lifetime, but faith continues. There is faith in some

Bhakti Yoga

Bhakti is a state of mind. One definition of bhakti is ‘that which unites you with the divine’, and the second definition is ‘that which makes your emotions tender, chaste and pure’. Religion adopted bhakti in the form of worship to the divine, and yoga adopted bhakti in the form of emotional purification. The crystal stone Sri Swami Satyananda used to ask, “What is the colour of a crystal stone?” It does not have a

Beginning of bhakti: hope

Bhakti yoga has been defined as yoga of devotion in common parlance. It is not the yoga of devotion, it is the yoga of emotion. There are a few rishis, sages, who have written treatises on bhakti yoga, mainly Sage Narada and Sage Shandilya. Sage Narada states that bhakti is leaving behind the material glasses and wearing the spiritual glasses. He describes bhakti as awareness of the transcendental quality under whose influence we all live.
